Updated: Apr 28, 2020
The president of South Africa has declared the outbreak of the COVID-19 as a national disaster across the nine provinces of South Africa, shortly prior to implementing a nation-wide lock-down which was effective since 26 March 2020. The primary purpose of the lock= down as announced by the president and health officials was to curb the spread of the virus which was noticeably taking its toll across the informal settlements as more internal cases were reported. Only essential service providers were allowed to operate during the lock-down i.e. Health care facilities, pharmacies, essential goods manufacturing and private hospitals. All other services operations were terminated and a national Gazette was established to that effect.
As the effect of the lock-down was serving two ways. Of course curbing the surge of the COVID-19 virus and simultaneously fracturing the economy of the country. The latter brought in major domestic concerns mainly related to starvation, suffering of small businesses and loss of jobs and opportunities. The lock-down came as a shock to many South Africans as people never anticipated it. Few weeks prior to the nation-wide lock-down being implemented, the economy of South Africa had already contracted by 4 %. This was a major concern for the government as it had to sacrifice the well being of the economy and the lives of people at parallel motive.
Recent news came with much relief to students and schools across South Africa. The government has declared the use of laptops and other educational materials as essential and such operations to remain open throughout the lock-down. Laptops are utilised across all educational institutions for learning purpose. The decision to relax regulations on the sales of laptops was received with great excitement as it will benefit a lot of students to prepare for studies.
